A family business

The Francesco Maggi Winery has 85 years of experience behind it: founded in 1940 and run by Nonno Francesco Maggi (hence the name of the winery) and Nonna Teresa Saviotti, then handed down to their sons Angelino and Giuseppe-the father and uncle of Marco Maggi, the current owner of the winery.

The property now covers more than 25 hectares under vines spread over several municipalities in Oltrepò Pavese: Canneto Pavese, Montescano and Castana, lands known since ancient times for great wines. As many as 22 products come to life in our winery, starting with the superb “Historic Buttafuoco” and other red wines such as Buttafuoco, Sangue di Giuda, Bonarda and Croatina, Barbera, Pinot Noir, white wines made from Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Muscat grapes, not to mention the great tradition of sparkling wines, including classic method and rosé sparkling wines.

The continuous pursuit of perfection

One of our main goals is the production of high quality wines and we strive to take the level higher and higher.

Tradition and Innovation

We carry on the tradition of making wine, but we are attentive to new developments in our industry.
The pruning in the vineyard, a fundamental operation for the production of important wines, is entrusted exclusively to the experience of a few people; the harvesting of the grapes is done strictly by hand to keep the skin intact until the crushing. At the same time, in the winery we process the grapes at a controlled temperature with state-of-the-art machinery, we have long adopted techniques that allow for an ever decreasing incidence of substances such as sulfites in the wine we produce, and we have introduced a nitrogen generator that goes to limit the amount of oxygen absorbed by the wine.

Who do we address?

We are projected into two distinct worlds but united by the same focus on wine:

Privates

can purchase our wines directly from the winery by appointment, or by home delivery using our gift cards or by contacting us directly.

Restaurants

those in the territory first, others in multiple parts of Italy and, over time, even those outside the national borders.

Enthusiasts

They consume our wine take up about 70 percent of our sales; thanks to them for the trust given and continually renewed and for the oldest but always effective form of advertising: word of mouth. Their recommendations at other wine lovers have always rewarded our efforts in producing quality wines.

Our territory

Oltrepò Pavese

Our land and winery are located in one of the most fascinating corners of Italy, from a naturalistic, scenic and agricultural point of view, with a thousand-year-old winemaking tradition: Oltrepò Pavese.

This name means “Land beyond the Po River.” and over the passage of centuries, the richness and fertility of this rich and majestic hillside area that runs on the slopes of the northern Apennines with an area of more than 20,000 hectares under vine, have led to viticulture of the highest level.

We are immersed in the third largest area of certified wine production in Italy.
Climatic conditions and the diversified and stratified conformation of the soil over geological eras have created optimal conditions for growing excellent grapes, which lay the foundation for producing wines of excellent quality. The soil is composed of clay, sand, tuff and gravel, depending on the area.

It is from our beautiful Oltrepò that 75% of the entire national Pinot Noir production is obtained.

Canneto Pavese, the hub of our winery, is located in the heart of Oltrepo Pavese. Here the vineyards stretch over a hilly strip straddling the Versa Valley and the Scuropasso Valley, at an altitude between 129 and 280 meters.

We are part of the Oltrepò Pavese District, of Consorzio Tutela Vini Oltrepò Pavese and the Historical Buttafuoco Club.
