Buttafuoco dell'Oltrepò Pavese DOC

The red wine that defies time

From a selection of our vineyards comes this Buttafuoco wine, that does more than just tell the story of the territory: it embodies it. Buttafuoco is more than an appellation, it is a declaration of identity, a flame that burns beneath the surface of the hills of seven municipalities of the Oltrepò Pavese, within the recognized “historic zone” divided into three bands in Broni, Canneto Pavese, Castana, Cigognola, Montescano, Stradella and Pietra de’ Giorgi.

Our vineyards dedicated to Buttafuoco Storico extend right across some of these areas, in the central belt.

Origins and name: between fire and legend

The name “Buttafuoco” has its roots in a dialect expression: al buta me al feugh — in the dialect of Pavia — meaning “it warms like fire.”

This is a reference to the strong character and the full-bodied structure of this red wine, but also to its ability to awaken the senses. According to a legend that got lost in the mists of time, during clashes with the Piedmontese, a company of sailors from the Imperial Austro-Hungarian Navy stationed in Stradella failed to show up at the start of wartime operations, because they scouted barrels of Buttafuoco.

Sailors found the wine and barrels far more interesting than facing the enemy. The symbol of the sailing ship forged on the bottles of Buttafuoco Storico, on the other hand, comes from a sailing ship of the Austro-Hungarian Navy- which here had the task of ferrying its troops on the Po River- and it was given the name Buttafuoco, recalling the legendary episode of the sailors grappling with this wine.

There is nothing fanciful, however, in our Buttafuoco: it is a concrete, mighty, austere wine.

Origins and name: between fire and legend

Buttafuoco has been a DOC since 2010 and it follows a strict specification, which requires the use of certain indigenous grape varieties in percentages to be strictly observed. These are the following black grapes:

  • Croatina
  • Barbera
  • Uva Rara and/or Ughetta di Canneto

The combined winemaking of these grapes generates a wine with a deep ruby red color and penetrating aromas: it is round, full-bodied on the palate, with an energy that remains etched in memory.

Our winery is a member of the Buttafuoco Storico Club, founded in 1996 with the goal of giving voice to a wine that is an authentic expression of a restricted territory.

A wine with deep character

Each Buttafuoco wine is named after its vineyard: our Costera – Rogolino – Abbondanza vineyards.

Buttafuoco Storico Vigna Costera, Buttafuoco Storico Vigna Rogolino and Buttafuoco Abbondanza are red wines to be enjoyed by giving them all the attention they deserve.

They tell about our meticulousness, our courageous choices, about an earth we care knowing its inestimable value, about the pursuit of perfection we put our energies in.

Our three Buttafuoco wines aim to defy time, for the preservation of the precious tradition of an ancient territory encapsulated inside the bottles, for the ability to age while maintaining quality, for their value on par with the universally known great red wines, for their high profile capable of enhancing the most complex and elaborate dishes of gastronomy.

To complete the range, two more products come to life fromB uttafuoco Storico:

  • the Buttafuoco Chinato “Chinà”
  • Buttafuoco distilled spirit

Buttafuoco Storico Vigna Costera has received several awards: we are really proud of them.

We will always put our utmost effort, because we want to offer a prestigious product to all those who love wine, and moreover, we also want that Buttafuoco Storico Vigna Rogolino too – the latest one in to our winery, can be able to leave a mark and receive recognition from the most authoritative realities in the sector

Our territory

The Oltrepò

This name means “Land beyond the Po,” and over the years the richness and fertility of this majestic area have been entirely expressed through high-level agriculture and viticulture. In the hilly part of the Oltrepò Pavese, where the main activity is the cultivation of vines, excellent quality grapes are produced, resulting in an excellent final product.
